HOW DOES A PLUG-IN HYBRID CAR WORK?
Plug-in hybrid cars are a combination of an electric car and a petrol engine car. A hybrid vehicle uses two sources of power: a petrol engine and one or two electric motors with a battery and external charging port. There is a difference between a full hybrid car and a plug-in hybrid car, a plug-in hybrid car must be plugged in to recharge the battery but can travel significantly further in electric mode than full hybrids.
IN COMPARISON TO PETROL ENGINES DO PLUG-IN HYBRID VEHICLES EMIT LESS CO2?
By charging your hybrid vehicle’s battery regularly you can drive up to 39 miles in electric mode with no CO2 exhaust emissions. To optimise CO2 emissions, choose driving in 100% electric mode for daily driving.
SHOULD I BUY A PLUG-IN HYBRID OR AN ELECTRIC CAR?
The decision between both depends on your wants and needs, driving habits as well as charging access. An example of this would be: if you drive long distances frequently then a hybrid vehicle would most likely suit you best, as you wouldn't have to stop to recharge like you would in an electric vehicle.
HOW LONG SHOULD I EXPECT A HYBRID BATTERY TO LAST?
Hybrid batteries have been designed to last the life of the car, so they do not need replacing, however it will be affected by a number of factors including: the make and model of the car, driving style, frequency and standard of maintenance, load weight and cleanliness. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN MY HYBRID RUNS OUT OF BATTERY?
Your hybrid will continue to run using its petrol or diesel engine once the battery is empty, however it is likely to be automatically recharged by the engine or using regenerative braking. However, if your hybrid does run out of fuel, similarly to a conventional car it will come to a stop and they are not designed to function without fuel.
HOW ARE HYBRID CAR BATTERIES MADE?
The battery of a hybrid car will be a nickel-metal hydride or lithium-ion type. Lithium-ion batteries are much more popular as they are less toxic and hold their charge better when not in use, whilst offering a better performance in high temperatures.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HYBRID AND A PLUG-IN HYBRID?
A self charging hybrid will not need to be plugged in to be charged, it will be generator driven by the combustion engine, or sometimes charged using regenerative braking. Whereas, a plug-in hybrid can self charge like a standard hybrid however it can also been connected to a charging point to charge whilst parked, and can drive solely on electric power for a typical range of 20 to 40 miles.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR A HYBRID CAR TO CHARGE?
The time it will take to charge will depend on the size of the battery, how much energy has been used and the power output of the charging point. The slowest chargers will have a plug-in hybrid fully charged in 5 hours, or a rapid charging station will charge in 25 minutes of less.
