What is a catalytic converter?

Since 1993, every vehicle in Europe is lawfully required to be fitted with a catalytic converter. As part of the vehicle's emissions control system, it cleans up the exhaust gases before they are emitted into the environment through the exhaust pipe. The internal elements react with the gases to break them down into less harmful substances and water vapour.
Why are they a target for thieves?

The motivations for this crime can differ, although the most common factor is the attraction to sell and recycle the catalytic converter to obtain the precious metals contained in them, such as rhodium, platinum and palladium. Typically, older Toyota models can be targeted because the latest technology has ensured a lower value of precious metals are contained in newer vehicle catalytic converters.
What can I do to help prevent catalytic converter theft?

Since 2021, Toyota GB has been covertly marking catalytic converters to help combat theft and make the parts traceable. Not only does this help police find the criminals responsible, but also raises the risk along the criminal chain.
