A brand new vehicle insurance development based on the way a driver behaves whilst driving the data gathered from an on-board telematics system, is being made available for drivers of Toyota’s connected cars.* Premiums shall be partly calculated on the level of safe driving that is recorded monthly.
Having been jointly developed by Toyota Motor Corporation, and Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance, part of the MS&AD Insurance Group, is the first of its kind insurance to be offered in Japan.
Using this newly developed plan, up to 80 per cent** of the usage-based premiums can be discounted for the driver. Not only are discounts for good driving available, additionally, future services will be offered, themed under enjoyment, benefits and safeguards. With new services going on sale next January and insurance liability scheduled to start in April 2018.
Developing telematics car insurance makes use of the opportunities provided by connected cars and automobile big data, both Toyota and Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance want to help realise a safe and secure traffic environment.
The service features
Toyota cars that are connected, automatically transmit a range of car-related data from the data collection module and send it to the Toyota Smart Centre. Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance use this information to provide its new services, the Toyota Tsunagaru car insurance plan, unique to Toyota vehicles.
This insurance plan has focused on providing customers peace of mind when involved in an accident. Designing this bespoke service, Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance is aiming also to offer added value for safe drivers.
The company delivers each customer a safe driving diagnosis and driving score with tips after each journey they have made. Speed, acceleration and braking are scored on a five-point scale, the combined score out of 100 is then generated. A geographical report map enables users to view the route taken and identify locations where any dangerous driving was detected. The system provides alerts regarding the operational status of the car’s active safety devices, tyre pressures and other functions.
Depending on the model of the car, the customer may receive a monthly report evaluating their overall performance, information on any insurance premium discount offered and advice on safe driving.
The scheme is also developing an entertainment element enabling customers to see their national ranking in terms of their safe driving score and how they compare to drivers of similar model and age in their region.
