It comes as little surprise that the Toyota Prius is the world's best-selling hybrid vehicle, as it seamlessly switches between full-electric mode and petrol-electric propulsion while offering plenty of space for family motorists.
Almost five years after the introduction of Toyota’s pioneering first model, the stage is set for the all-new Prius Plug-in Hybrid to redefine the experience of plug-in hybrid vehicles all over again, with class leading targeted CO2 emissions of 28g/km and average fuel consumption of 235mpg. Discover what makes our new Hybrid’s fully electric driving experience truly special.
The Prius' body has been designed to be as aerodynamic as possible, but this doesn't mean a compromise on styling. The sharp front end has a wide lower mesh grille and slim upper air intake, with large headlamps sweeping backwards towards the roofline. Sporty 15-inch alloy wheels are standard-fit, and the body-coloured door mirrors are electrically adjustable, heated and retractable. There are LED daytime running lights to turn heads day or night plus front fog lamps for full visibility in gloomy conditions.
Inside the cabin the arrangement is roomy and functional whether in the front or back. Behind the wheel every major function can be controlled instantly as the centre stack has been positioned with the driver firmly in mind. A convenient storage area is positioned below to hold whatever you need where it can be reached instantly, while at the back there are generous amounts of head and legroom. Awara black cloth upholstery is found in the entry-level T3 grade, and you have the option to fit Setana black leather instead for extra luxury.
The all new Prius Plug-In has many innovative features with improved efficiency and smarter design to enhance the driving experience. Following the introduction of the new Prius Plug-In, discover the PHEV's intuitive design with improved comfort and functionality.
As with any Toyota full Hybrid, the Prius Plug-in is able to run on its petrol engine or electric motor alone, or both together, while regenerative braking recaptures electrical energy for storage in the battery.
By building on the foundations of the latest generation Prius – which showcases a more dynamic drive and an all-new full hybrid system – the intuitive, silent and responsive Prius Plug-in Hybrid’s (PHV) is the perfect fit for those who want a Hybrid car with the benefits of extended Electric Vehicle (EV) driving
The Prius is undoubtedly advanced, with cutting-edge systems not restricted to under the bonnet. Inside you can access the Toyota Touch multimedia display which is used to control audio playback. A smartphone can be linked through the Bluetooth interface and with the same feature calls can be taken hands-free as you are on the move. Toyota Touch & Go Plus navigation is among the impressive options with T3 and T4 models and a no-cost fixture in the range-topping Prius T Spirit.
Solar panels allow the car to charge from the sun, increasing the range up to 3 miles a day! An innovative piece of tech which helps you save battery! You can now retain some control of the cars temperature with a timer setting for climate control so you can pre-heat or pre-cool the car.
The Prius Plug-in Hybrid’s energy-conserving four-lamp matrix LED headlights with Adaptive Headlight System incorporate unique, speed-sensitive, adaptive beam technology. Using a light-sensing camera to detect the headlights of oncoming vehicles and tail lights of those ahead, it automatically adjusts your headlight beam so as not to dazzle drivers ahead. It even varies the angle and depth of the light beam to match your vehicle’s speed and help spread the light when cornering.
The Prius Plug-in Hybrid also features Toyota Safety Sense as standard. Highlights include Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control (with full stop technology) which detects a change in distance to the vehicle in front and causes the Prius Plug-in Hybrid to either slow, come to a complete standstill or accelerate smoothly back to its pre-selected cruising speed, once traffic speed increases.
The performance the Prius is renowned for comes from a combined 122HP 1.8-litre VVT-i petrol engine and two electric motors. The manufacturer calls this technology Hybrid Synergy Drive and it automatically chooses the optimum driving mode for efficient output, although you can select this yourself. EV mode runs the car purely on electric power for up to two kilometres, emitting no CO2 and consuming no fuel. Combined fuel consumption can be as high as 78mpg, and when the combustion engine is in use only 82g/km of CO2 is released.
Inside the Prius Plug-in Hybrid’s advanced cabin, a wireless phone charger in the centre console allows you to recharge compatible smartphones without the need for a cable, while a colour head-up display presents essential information on the windscreen, so you don’t have to take your eyes off the road. There is also a new battery 'charge mode' available at the push of a button, which gives the driver on demand EV battery charging while driving, for when EV charge is depleted.
Completing this impressive host of features is Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Simple Intelligent Parking Assist (S-IPA) system, which uses an array of sensors to identify and steer into and out of parallel parking spaces – it will even guide you into perpendicular spaces too, for complete peace of mind.
Alongside rewarding performance the vehicle drives safely, and actively helps you to stay out of trouble. Vehicle Stability Control Plus (VSC+) and Traction Control (TRC) make adjustments to the power output and braking to stabilise the Prius, and Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC) holds the model still as you pull away on a slope. Front active headrests, multiple airbags and ISOFIX child seat anchor points are among the robust passive features.
