With an unconventional look that you can customise to express your own personality, the new Aygo from Toyota has no equivalents. It is fun to drive and cheap to run no matter where your travels take you, and boasts plenty of Toyota technology inside.
The most striking feature of the Aygo is its 'X' face which comprises a pointed bonnet lid and angular front bumper. The slim headlamps accentuate this dynamic detail, and on either side the waistline rises when it meets the rear window towards the long tail light pillar. Carbon-effect front inserts and door mirrors swap for gloss black and body-coloured alternatives as you climb the range, to complement the various optional styling packages you can add.
Inside the same eye-catching materials are used; notably, the centre console of all models is finished with carbon-effect trim, giving the cabin an extra touch of class. Choose an air vent surround and dashboard panel that match or contrast with each other, plus a seat upholstery to your individual taste. Practicality hasn't been overlooked either and you may be surprised by how much room is found in the cabin. The vehicle seats four, and the rear bench in all but the X spec level folds in half to increase the boot space.
Incorporated with the Aygo's eclectic design is cutting-edge Toyota technology across the range. The entry-level X model has an audio system with USB and AUX input, and just one model above you can enjoy Bluetooth® connectivity, air conditioning and the option for an x-touch multimedia system. The unit boasts a seven-inch colour touchscreen, DAB digital radio and rear-view camera. X-nav satellite navigation is another advanced piece of kit you can select when buying a higher spec example, as is the x-wave electrically retractable roof.
Toyota fits one engine to the Aygo, yet it's all you need for thrilling motoring from the start to the end of any on-road adventure. The 69bhp 1.0-litre VVT-i petrol unit also produces 95Nm of torque to accelerate eagerly, and you can opt for five-speed manual or the firm's x-shift gearbox, which couples an electric clutch with the same manual box. Pleasingly high economy of up to 68.9mpg combined is the outcome while at the same time both drivetrain combinations release less than 95g/km of CO2.
One area in which the Aygo clearly reflects the rest of Toyota's model family is safety. Working to prevent accidents in the first instance are features such as Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Hill-start Assist Control (HAC). If an accident were to occur the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) airbags deploy to protect all occupants, and ISOFIX anchor points will hold infant seats securely.
