While the Toyota Mirai might look as if it has arrived from the future, this fuel-cell-powered vehicle is definitely a modern-day reality. This stylish and innovative saloon car produces zero emissions and can be refuelled in as little as three minutes. It also offers a driving range of up to 342 miles.
A high-gloss finish really helps to show off the Mirai’s ultra-contemporary angles and contours. A striking front fascia features a subtly elevated bonnet, and svelte headlights that form the top of an ‘X’ motif that runs as far as the car’s side-view mirrors. The lower part of this same design takes in the Mirai’s vast air intakes, which aren’t just for show. Since the car relies on oxygen – in addition to hydrogen fuel – these expansive conduits serve an important purpose.
The Mirai’s cabin is just as futuristic-looking as the exterior body. It’s packed with leading-edge technology too and provides a safe and comfortable environment for up to four travellers. Each position is heated, and the driver is additionally treated to a reassuringly warm leather steering wheel. The cabin efficiently repels noises created by external elements such as wind and fellow road users, while electrostatic controls enable easy control of interior temperature. The vehicle possesses a 361-litre boot space, more than is offered by the Ford Focus, for instance.
The Mirai’s large air intakes allow oxygen to enter its fuel cell stack. In tandem with a battery pack and hydrogen fuel, this provides all the electricity that is needed to power the car’s motor. A visit to a dedicated hydrogen station will see the vehicle’s tank filled in no more than five minutes, producing no odours in the process. The car’s electric motor delivers 152bhp, an instant peak torque of 335Nm, 0-60mph in less than ten seconds and a top speed of 111mph – and no harmful gases whatsoever.
The Mirai is just as easy to drive as a conventionally powered vehicle but it’s a lot quieter than most and delivers a smooth ride too. Hydrogen stations can already be found in London – where there are five – Swindon, Sheffield and Aberdeen, and more are due to be added in other parts of the country.
