With a fresh new look, more equipment and enhanced driving dynamics, the new Auris from Toyota is better than ever. Driving is more enjoyable and rewarding at the wheel of the hatchback while high Toyota build quality means it can impress for years.
Hybrids don't behave like most cars. For a start, they recycle energy and have two engines working in harmony to deliver figures as impressively low as 3 litres of petrol consumed per 100km. A noticeable return indeed and one that can be further reduced when driving in Eco Mode. Of course, if you want to eliminate that figure completely, simply select electric EV-mode, go easy on the pedal and you won’t use a single drop when accelerating up to 50km/h. The future is here!
A sporty aesthetic draws admirers to the Auris, which the Japanese brand offers as both a regular hatchback and an estate. At the front the slim headlamps merge seamlessly with an upper air intake finished with an elegant chrome fin. The taillights stretch from the tailgate round to each wing, which gets a neat fold along the waistline to hint at the car's energy. LED daytime running lights and 'follow-me-home' headlamps are standard-fit, and to the Touring Sports estate Toyota fits black roof rails for an added storage option.
On the inside the Auris delivers comfort for all, as there is plenty of legroom for everyone to stretch out. For the driver's benefit the centre console is arranged to be uncluttered for ease of use, and with an Easy Flat seat system with 60/40 split folding rear bench, the interior is also flexible. Stylish patterned blue fabric upholstery is fitted to the entry-level Active model with the option for leather from the Icon grade upwards.
Across the Auris range you can enjoy access to the latest technology, which makes motoring more enjoyable, convenient and rewarding. The standard radio/CD audio system features USB and AUX-input for connecting external music devices, plus controls mounted directly to the steering wheel to make it much safer to operate. Icon adds a DAB digital radio and Bluetooth® interface to this, on top of the Toyota Touch 2 multimedia system with a colour display. Opt for Icon Plus and receive built-in satellite navigation as part of the Toyota Touch 2 with Go system.
Toyota understands that more is expected from today's passenger cars and the level of technology fitted to the Auris Hybrid reflects this knowledge. As standard the model gets an advanced audio system with AUX-in connector and USB input, plus audio switches on the steering wheel. Meanwhile, Icon, Icon Plus and Excel versions offer the Toyota Touch 2 multimedia system to which you can link an iPod® or MP3 player, and optional Toyota Touch 2 with Go navigation includes built-in satellite navigation. A rear-view camera has been included with all but the Active grade too, for safer and easier manoeuvring.
Fitted under the bonnet is your choice of engine from the model's impressive family. Two petrols are available starting with the 1.33-litre producing 99bhp. The 132bhp 1.6-litre alternative can be selected with Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) or a six-speed manual, the latter helping the hatchback sprint from 0-60mph in under ten seconds. If optimum fuel economy is the goal, choose the 1.4-litre D-4D diesel with start/stop system. The powertrain returns up to 74.3mpg combined and emits from 99g/km of CO2 which also means road tax exemption.
Clean output and rewarding returns are the result of the Auris Hybrid's combined petrol engine and strong electric motor. The combustion aspect is a 1.8-litre HSD engine that produces 136bhp, and it is supported by a 60kW generator. Together they enable the hatchback to complete 0-60mph in around 10.9 seconds and at the same time achieve up to 78.5mpg combined (hatchback). CO2 emissions also start from only 84g/km, which makes the model exempt from road tax to bring running costs down.
It's reassuring to know that the Auris has been fitted with Toyota's latest active safety technology and passive features which lessen the chance of an accident or injury occurring. Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Brake Assist (BA), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) all support you during difficult situations. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) comprises seven airbags for all-round protection which are complemented by Whiplash Injury Lessening (WIL) seats.
